If you are adding a home battery in Malta, the grant can cover a large share of the cost — but only if you apply in the right order and stay within the caps.
What the 2026 battery grant covers
Under the 2026 Renewable Energy Sources Scheme, eligible battery storage installed together with a new PV system can receive:
- 75% of eligible battery costs
- capped at €6,000 per system
- and capped at €600 per kWh of storage capacity
Whichever of those limits is reached first is the one that applies.
How much you could get by battery size

These figures show the kWh-based ceiling only. The 75% of eligible costs limit still applies on top, so if your battery costs less than the ceiling implies, the grant is 75% of the eligible price rather than the capped amount.
Support for the new PV system
Where a new PV system is installed, grant support for the panels themselves is 65% of eligible PV costs, capped at €3,000 per system and €645 per kWp.

If you already have solar
REWS stopped accepting new applications in July 2026 for the standalone battery and battery-retrofit options. If you already have PV and want to add storage, check the current REWS scheme status before ordering anything — availability can change between scheme rounds.
Apply before you buy
The application must be submitted and processed before you purchase or install the system. Work that is bought or installed first is normally not eligible, no matter how well it meets the technical requirements. Get the paperwork in first, then place the order.

Does a bigger battery mean a bigger benefit?
Not automatically. A larger battery only pays back if you actually have electricity to store and a reason to use it later. Size depends mainly on three things:
- how much surplus solar you generate during the day
- how much electricity you use in the evening
- how much backup you want during a power cut
