Are Home Batteries Worth It in Malta — and Can They Keep the Power On During a Power Cut?

Home batteries are becoming more common alongside solar panels, but there is still a lot of confusion about what they actually do.

At the simplest level, a battery lets you store electricity and use it later.

That can help you use more of your own solar energy, reduce how much electricity you need to buy from the grid at certain times, and — depending on the system — keep part of your home powered during a power cut.

What does a home battery actually do?

If you have solar panels, your home uses the electricity they generate first.

If the panels are producing more than you need, the surplus is normally exported to the grid.

A battery gives you another option:

store some of that surplus electricity and use it later.

For example, your solar panels may generate strongly during the day while nobody is home. A battery can store some of that electricity and release it later in the evening when your household demand rises.

The battery does not create electricity. It simply changes when you can use it.

Who is most likely to benefit from one?

A battery tends to be more useful when there is a big difference between when your solar panels generate electricity and when you actually use electricity.

It may be particularly relevant if:

  • your home is relatively quiet during the day
  • you use a lot of electricity in the evening
  • your solar system regularly exports surplus electricity
  • you have significant evening air-conditioning use
  • you want some protection from power cuts

If you already use most of your solar electricity while it is being generated, there may be less surplus available to store.

So two households with the same solar system can get very different value from a battery.

The key question is not simply “Do I have solar?”

It is:

“Am I regularly exporting electricity during the day and then buying electricity back from the grid later?”

That is where a battery can start to become more interesting.

Can a battery keep my home running during a power cut?

Potentially, yes — but not every battery installation will.

This is one of the most important things to understand before buying one.

A battery needs the correct inverter and electrical setup to provide backup power when the grid goes down.

Depending on the system, it may be able to keep things like:

  • lights
  • Wi-Fi
  • fridge and freezer
  • selected sockets
  • some air-conditioning
  • other essential circuits

Some systems can support much more of the property, but that depends on both the battery capacity and how much power the system can deliver at one time.

A battery may store plenty of energy but still not be designed to run every high-power appliance simultaneously.

How long could it keep the power on?

That depends on what you are trying to run.

A battery supporting lights, internet equipment and a refrigerator may last considerably longer than one trying to run several air-conditioning units, cooking appliances and other heavy loads.

That is why backup systems are often designed around essential circuits rather than trying to power absolutely everything.

If backup power matters to you, ask the installer a very specific question:

“Exactly what in my house will keep working if the grid goes down?”

It is also worth asking whether part of the battery can be kept in reserve so there is always some stored energy available if an outage occurs.

So, are home batteries worth it?

For some households, definitely more than others.

They are most interesting where:

  • there is plenty of surplus solar during the day
  • a lot of electricity is used later in the evening
  • increasing solar self-use is valuable
  • backup power has real value to the household

But whether the economics work depends on the cost of the battery, the amount of electricity you can realistically shift from day to night, and what you would otherwise receive for exporting that electricity.

That is why sizing the battery properly matters.

A battery that is far bigger than the amount of surplus solar available to charge it may not deliver the return you expect.
